State Sen. Lisa Stone Barnes, R-Nash, garnered 55 percent of the vote in defeating her Democratic opponent Mark Speed, 41,502 to 34,046 votes.

Barnes, 56, is a former Nash County commissioner. She was elected to the board’s District 4 seat in 2012 and served in that post for six years.
