Internships at Sinclair Public Affairs

At Sinclair, intern positions are intended for candidates who wants real-world agency experience in the setting of a small firm – plenty of hands-on experience with client work and relevant, current policy issues in both North Carolina and beyond.  Interns are highly valued at Sinclair and have the ability to move into more permanent part-time and full time positions based on ability, work ethic, availability and other factors. Sinclair PA internships are not full-time employment and are designed for a part-time hourly work week depending on candidate availability and current workload, to be determined at the time of the interview. We offer internships in the spring, summer and fall on a semester-long basis. Applications typically open 1-3 months before the semester begins.

Flex Intern

This position is intended for a candidate who wants real-world agency experience in the setting of a small firm. Interns are highly valued at Sinclair PA and have the ability to move into more permanent positions such as: senior intern, part-time team member, or full-time staff. The flex intern’s role overlaps with both the digital and account services team. A flex intern serves many different functions in the Sinclair organization. Departmental focus may vary from day to day, but first priority remains with the Senior Account Direct and account services.

  • Works closely with Leadership Team to ensure client work and company marketing tasks are completed on time
  • Learns the fundamentals of media relations to support Leadership Team – including list development and management, identifying targeted publications and reporters, media strategy and pitching among other tools and skills
  • Helps support office needs like delivering proposals, making copies of hand-outs and potentially helping distribute documents at the General Assembly or planning and managing special events (press conferences, information booths)
  • Support project management, setting timelines, communicating budgets, campaign tactics and collecting team feedback and progress
  • Assist with vendor communications, product development and tracking
  • Support the digital team by assisting with, social media monitoring, content creation, social media and website reporting, blog writing and research, text copy and graphics, along with other items the digital team is currently working on

Digital Media Intern

This position is intended for a candidate who wants real-world agency experience in the setting of a small firm. Interns are highly valued at Sinclair PA and have the ability to move into more permanent positions such as: senior intern, part-time team member, or full-time staff. The digital team intern’s role is centered around social and digital content creation, including graphic design and copywriting. 

  • Works closely with Leadership Team to ensure client work and company marketing (including social media and blogs) are completed on time
  • Learns the fundamentals of media relations to support Leadership Team – including list development and management, identifying targeted publications and reporters, media strategy and pitching among other tools and skills
  • Helps support office needs like delivering proposals, making copies of hand-outs and potentially helping distribute documents at the General Assembly or planning and managing special events (press conferences, information booths)
  • Works with digital team to create social and digital content in the form of copywriting, research analysis, graphic design, social media publishing, blog writing and research, and website copywriting
  • Helps support the digital team by monitoring social media and news outlets for the latest updates in key markets, including the North Carolina General Assembly 
  • Support any other needs the digital team has, including, but not limited to: monthly reporting, press release writing and distribution, media relations support

Previous Sinclair Public Affairs Interns

Kailey McSwain began as a digital media intern at Sinclair while finishing up school at Appalachian State University. Shortly after graduation she joined our team full-time as an Account Director.
Rachel Shelton worked as a Digital Media Intern from 2019-2020. After her time at Sinclair, she went on to graduate from North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Political Science and Government. She is currently a law student at William and Mary. We are very proud of all her success!
Kennedy Kapps was Sinclair PA’s Digital and Social Media intern for the summer of 2022. She is currently working on her Communications B.A. at Western Carolina University, where she plays varsity soccer. She’ll graduate December 2022.
